New Citizen Alert in Boston, Massachusetts

VEHICLE SECURITY TIPS
Boston, Massachusetts: Vehicle Security Tips

The Boston Police Department would like to remind you to secure your vehicles when parking. The following vehicle safety tips will help reduce the likelihood that your vehicle will be broken into:

Most larcenies from an auto are opportunistic. Thieves look for vehicles that contain valuables in plain site like electronics, wallets, briefcases, hockey equipment, and the like.

The first rule of thumb is to take your valuables with you or secure them in your trunk if you must. GPS devices are of particular interest to thieves and it is important to not only remove the device but also remove the suction cup holder from the windshield or mount. Thieves look for these mounting devices and when one is spotted, they assume a device is likely hidden inside your vehicle and will be tempted to break in.

Additional tips:

* Invest in an anti-theft device. Protect your car from being stolen. An anti-theft device is essential. An audible alarm alerts attention to the car. Anti-theft locking devices hold the steering wheel in place. Having an anti-theft device can also lower the cost of your auto insurance.

* Lock your doors and windows. A thief will insert a wire into a slightly open window to pop up the door lock. An unlocked door is an open invitation to a thief.

* When possible park in a well lit area.
