Reading and Book Signing with Gregory Maguire on July 14th

Carriage House Concert Series

 

The Larz Anderson Museum cares for and protects many unique and remarkable vehicles, as well as many other significant historic artifacts. We offer engaging educational programs for all age levels. And throughout the Museum’s castle-like building, we present enriching exhibits and displays that are not only captivating, but you may just learn something from them as well.

The Museum is fortunate enough to hold and care for America’s oldest collection of automobiles. The collection is important because it highlights the rapid development of the automobile and related technologies and societal changes which filled the early years of the twentieth century. Who we are today, where we live, how we get around, what businesses we find on our street corners…all of society and culture have been altered radically by the advent and advance of the automobile.

  

The concert series is held in the carriage house (see photo below).  The vaulting ceilings provide an ideal acoustical environment for these fine performers.

The Artists
 
Sharon Lewis
After touring the world and releasing 4 albums as one half of the brilliant female duo Pooka, UK songwriter Sharon Lewis is now performing songs from her debut solo album The Hour Lilies. Previous tours in the UK, USA and Europe have seen her accompanying acts such as Everything But The Girl, Kristen Hersh, The Levellers and Al Stewart, in addition to intensive headline tours throughout France, Italy and the UK. Accompanied by piano and guitar Sharon’s songs are classic and soulful. Her performances have been described as “remarkably intimate with melodies that turn you inside out”. Sharon has recently sung with legendary dance act The Chemical Brothers and also collaborated with artists such as Orbital, Ultramarine and Rob Ellis of PJ Harvey. Produced, composed and recorded by Sharon, The Hour Lilies is a home spun record featuring a very fine collection of gentle and original songs.
 
Rose Polenzani
Rose Polenzani was raised in the Chicago area and attended Knox College before leaving to pursue a singing career. Her singing style is distinctive and emotionally charged. She plays guitar and, less frequently, piano. Her lyrics often consist of rich blends of obscure images and emotions. Rose has performed in Lilith Fair in 1998, and the Sundance Film Festival in 1999. She has opened for the Indigo Girls, David Gray, Vic Chesnutt, Patty Griffin, Joan Baez, Jonatha Brooke, and Shawn Colvin. She has been reviewed positively in the Utne Reader, BUST Magazine, and the Boston Globe. Rose performed as part of Voices on the Verge, a collaborative musical project with Beth Amsel, Jess Klein, and Erin McKeown. Voices on the Verge toured together in 2001 and 2002 and released a live album, Voices on the Verge: Live In Philadelphia on the Rykodisc label. In 2004, Polenzani toured with Sharon Lewis of the British band Pooka, whom she cites as a major musical influence.

Reservations:  Seating is limited to 40.  Reservations are greatly appreciated and make running the series much more enjoyable for all! Make reservations by sending an email to notlobmusic@gmail.com.  Be sure to include your name, number of seats and contact information. Email will be checked until midnight the night before the concert and
you will receive a reply.  Confirmed reservations will be held until 15 minutes before the concert; unclaimed reservations will be released to the general public, first come, first served.

Children:  Well-behaved children (12+) are welcome.

Refreshments (coffee, teas, soda, water, pastries) are available.  No outside food is allowed.

Photography,  video recording, sound recording.  Still, non-flash photos are allowed. Check with a volunteer for anything beyond that.

Parking: Parking is limited to 12 vehicles, first come, first served. The gates will be closed when the lot is full. There is a public parking lot behind Blanchard’s liquors, one block away.  If you require handicapped parking, please call the LG House caretaker the day of the show - 617-524-3158.

Public Transportation (MBTA): Take #39 bus from either Back Bay Station or Forest Hills Station to Monument stop, directly in front of the Loring-Greenough House, at the intersections of Centre and South Streets.
